2010: Make Every Day Count

My goal for this year is to do something exceptional each day. What do I mean by this? I could be something I have been putting off for a long time; or something that I do every day, only better than I ever have before. For example, my daily run does not count, but a PR for time or distance does. It has to be something that takes extra effort, and produces a significant benefit either for myself or others. Yesterday I had my hair done. I know it does not sound like much, but it really did take some effort. I was long overdue and have plans to go out with my husband for New Year's Eve, so I wanted to be "presentable" . I worked 7p-7:30a, had a 9:30 appointment, and did not get to bed until noon, only to be up at 5:30p to get ready for another night at work. Was I tired and irritable? You betcha, but it was definatley worth it. This morning after work I plan on getting my nails and eyebrows done. Everybody needs to start somewhere, lol.

Merry Christmas?

Well well. Here it is, December 24th, and still 2 more nights of work to go. I guess Christmas is as done as it's going to get. Wrapped M's presents up when I got home from work, still have some cards I have not sent out yet. They are already 7 years late, so a few more days I guess. I basically try to avoid the holidays, and I have become a champ at that at least. For now, finish my beer, and off to bed.

Getting better every day

Woke up early to get in a 6 mile run before work. Still a bit anxious about the Houston Marathon, about 9 weeks away now. I am pretty sure I can complete it, I am just not sure I can do it in my goal time, which is 4:30. I am looking forward to it though, should be a blast with 22,000 runners. Just hope I don't get trampled. lol. Back to work now, hope to run again in the morning.

Survival of the fittest?

My bad, blew off my morning run. Work just kicked my ass last night. This swine flu is making our ICU look like a war zone. So many young and "middle-aged" folks are so very sick. I cam home, grabbed a beer and a Krispy Kreme, and logged onto the computer. The KK's are M's fault, I would not eat them if he had not brought them home. I know, self-control, I have none. Anyway, I do plan on getting in my 6 miler after I get some rest, before returning to work.

Swim, bike, run...lather, rinse, repeat

Ok here it is folks, the "ultimate" goal...to complete a full Ironman race before my 45th birthday. 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike, 26.2 mile run. Call it delusional, or a death wish.. that's for you to decide. I really do not know what this middle aged, slightly overweight body is capable of, but it will be interesting to find out. Thus far I have registered for a 15k race next month, and my first full marathon in January 2010. This is what my planned race schedule looks like.
Sept. 2009 15k
Oct. 2009 Half-marathon
Jan. 2010 Marathon
June 2010 70.3 Ironman (Half-Ironman)
Nov. 2010 Ironman

Keep checking back for training progress and race reports. I will try to update daily.

Back on track

Not really a bad day today, got 2 workouts in today; a run and a short swim in the canal. I did not train at all during vacation. Sure, I did a lot of hiking, but I could not even consider running. At that altitude, I was barely able to breath standing still. I recall one night after a few drinks, we noticed they were setting up a tent outside, and went to investigate. Turns out there was an off road (mountain) marathon that weekend. Of course I was all like "I'll do it" thank goodness I didn't actually sign up. Just what I need, another $95 t-shirt (and a stroke). Maybe next year, turns out it is a point-to-point race, mostly downhill, I can do that. haha.

Back Home

Back from vacation yesterday. I had every intention of keeping a travel log, but I guess I was just too busy having fun!! Traveled up to the mountains of New Mexico & Colorado to escape the heat. Usually our vacations are fine dining and museums, this time it was hiking, rafting, horseback riding. I wish I could just live on-vacation all the time, but who doesn't? Anyway, back home now, and I don't have to return to work for another week.

Beach to Bay

How can I begin to describe this? Beach to Bay is a 6-leg relay marathon from North Padre Island to the Bay of Corpus Christi. 1980 teams= nearly 12,000 runners. I was running leg 4, 4.8 miles through the Naval Air Station. The problem was traffic! I was unable to get off the island (where I live) and to my starting place by car. I wound up getting out of the car (my husband was driving), and getting there on foot, leaving my teammate waiting for me for 1/2 hour or so. I was already exhausted by the time I picked up the baton. Then, when I finished my leg, I still had to walk 2 more miles to get to my ride; as they were not allowing private cars within 2 miles of the base. I figure I covered 12 miles that day. Oh my aching legs. And to make it worse, our team finished in just under 6 hours (well after all the children had crossed the finish line). Lesson learned- next year, run the 1st or 2nd leg.

What's up?

I have not written for awhile, so I guess it is time for an update. No, I did not run in the triathlon, I am ashamed to say that I chickened out. But I do have the Beach-to-Bay relay marathon May 16th. I cannot get out of that, as I am part of a relay team. I have been running every other day. Corpus Christi is a difficult place to train & run. It seems the only relief from the 90% humidity, is the 30mph winds. I just finished up my week at work, and am beginning to enjoy three relaxing days and nights. Yea!

Should I do it?

Well, there is the Corpus Christi Triathlon April 26, and I am thinking of making it my 1st triathlon. There does not appear to be any danger of it selling out, so I will probably wait until the Friday prior to sign up. It is a sprint distance race, 1k swim/30k bike/5k run. I certain I could complete the course if I was the only one out there, what I am most concerned about is causing an accident on the bike portion, or being run-over, kicked, etc in the swim. But at some point I just have to do it, and when it is all over, as long as I finish...I can say that I am a triathlete.

Time to move

Not very impressive, I have not really worked out for over a week. Work has been kicking my butt, but I suppose that is no excuse. The only race I have coming up is Beach to Bay relay marathon May 16. My leg is 4.6 miles, hardly an Ironman. Being a relay, I have teammates depending on me, so time to get moving and train!

Procrastination

If there is one thing I have mastered in this life, it is the art of procratsination. In fact, it is amazing that I have ever finished anything. I spend alot of time planning my days, and then throwing the plan out the window. So, I have streamlined my daily goals down to four items: Eat well, meditate, train, and sleep. Of course ther are other things that must be done, like going to work, but this will give me a start. And right now I need to get back to work.
